Edible Infrastructure- Darrick Borowski, Jeroen Janssen, Nikoletta Poulimeni

Check out this project from a few students at The AA.  Done as part of an emergent technologies class, the few students created a new neighborhood, computational derived from the need for space and sustainability.  Although we would have liked to see some of the more important buildings have a more thorough design, the importance is in the larger scale of the urban fabric that is created.

Differentiated Tensile Wood Laminate Morphologies – Bum Suk Ko

Today we are featuring a project from the University of Stuttgart.  For his Diploma project, Bum Suk Ko starts by researching and testing wood laminates to gain an understanding of the material properties- A fundamental part of his project.  Through these investigations Bum Suk Ko was able to create curved units with varying degrees of rotation . The aim of the project was to create a self-supporting structure made up of a series of these modular units.

SCHOOL: University of Stuttgart
PROFESSORS: A. Menges, S. Ahlquist

Santa’s Digital Workshop- University of Architecture and Urbanism “Ion Mincu”

Check out this great workshop from the U of Architecture and Urbanism in Bucharest.  The students took part in a workshop to design complex digital forms, and produced by 3d printing.  The ornaments were part of an interactive Christmas tree installation.

Polymorphic Bench- Fast Pace/Slow Pace Team 2, Columbia GSAPP

Polymorphic is a bench that fulfills multiple different functions, taking different forms, and also morphing to different arrangements of users.  It encourages interaction among people through the see-saw like design of each section.  It’s awesome, in terms of catalyzing social interaction away from things like Facebook and into our everyday life, but it seems like there could have been other ways to cooperate on the bench, besides who goes up and who goes down.  What do you think of the overall project?

Exoskeleton – Dion J Dekker, Cal Poly

In the last couple years we have seen a lot of shipping container designs from some of today’s leading designers.  This design comes from Dion J Dekker of Cal Poly in his award winning design for a Miami Beach hotel to be built with the re-use of shipping containers to win a Modular Building Institute (MBI) student design competition.  The main unit of the shipping container was used solely as an integrated component of the programmatic design, where in a lot of shipping container designs it is the sole feature of the project.

Danaus, A Polymorphic Installation- Tulane, Digital Fabrication

Tulane architecture students in Ammar Eloueini’s Digital Fabrication class have created a pretty interesting little installation.  Starting with the idea of anamorphic graphics, the students created a structure that appears as one form when viewed correctly, but is made up of different pieces, each unique.  The pieces range in depth, up to 10 inches thick, where the form acts as a bookshelf.

A Cultural Interchange – University of Nottingham – Ji Soo Han

A look at the place of computational design in the process of form creation. Ji Soo Han uses multiple mathematical formulas to create the form of this project.  Does this process of creation (identifying variables, running some scripts, taking produced form and creating enclosure) marginalize the role of an architect in the design process?

Teletropolis – Kervin W Brisseaux – Syracuse SOA

A dark look at architecture and technology, as we look at another ongoing conversation between man versus the machine.  How we as man create because we can, we invent because we think, and design because of passion.  Kervin Brisseaux pushes the philosophical view that even though each generation has pushed technology to advance the global culture, at which point does technology then in turn regress human evolution.

Fluid Motions School – Cal Poly – Jie Liang

One of today’s most controversial and iconic architects of today, Frank Gehry, is constantly pushing for architecture in motion.  Can a physical building give the notion of movement or do we, as the designers/architects, like to think that architecture can have a mental impact on the user?  Jie Liang from Cal Poly pushes fluid motions through the design of this school, through the use of materials, spacing, and the juxtaposition of organizational program.  However he mentions the notions of “speed” and “fluid dynamics”, are they notions or can this actually be felt in today’s architecture?

PROJECTiONE

Some of you are currently working on your architectural thesis, while others are trying not to think about your nearing final year in school.  So we thought we’d mix it up a little today and bring to you a totally different style of approaching your thesis, done by four students from Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning.  This collaboration of students proposed a group thesis where they spent a year exploring the world of design fabrication and today’s modern fabrication equipment as a business platform.  And now a year out of school their company PROJECTiONE has joined the ranks of emerging architectural fabrications shops like THEVERYMANY and Bram Geenen.
