V-Dress – Brian Harms

As architects and designers we tend to stray into every field of exploration, which is proven by the diverse portfolio of Brian Harms.  A strong interest in digital fabrication and forward thinking design drew F+ to his work.  The V-Dress, or voronoi dress, is a cross pollination of architecture, fashion, and digital production.  We have touched about upon this topic before, as it seems to have become a growing trend with digital fabrication bridging into high fashion.  The V-Dress modular unit that hides the body plays with provocative nature of veiling and revealing the human body.  Check it out after the jump!

The days of summer are a welcomed relief after a year buried in studio, where you are constantly straining, flexing, pushing the designer within. FIELD SO GOOD – Ben Warwas

One of our favorite things about architecture school is the ability to go nuts and create forms from anything you can think of.  We’r really diggin’ this project from Ben at SCI-Arc.  Using a pattern within a field condition, he creates living spaces at different scales, using the same tessellated pattern.  The graphics are what we really like about this project, going nuts with color, providing a playful change to the normal black and white drawings.

Knitted Cloud – Mehrzad Rafeei & Somayyeh Ramezani

Check out this crazy project from Mehrzad & Somayyeh at Sci-Arc.  Made to better bridge the gap between digitally designed, computational geometries and their physical construction, it’s a series of small shading structures made to form a network that shades an entire stadium.  Check it out.

Bundle House – Jason Orbe-Smith & Keyla Hernandez

Some architects live for straight lines and simple geometrical forms, and others are enticed by the elegance and seductiveness of a curve. Jason Orbe-Smith & Keyla Hernandez’s exploration into curvature with their Bundle House certainly would catch the eye of both sides of the conversation.  The language and detail of the curve is given strength and rigor through the exploration of digital scripting, where the spaces flow into each other and visual densities define private and public space through the fenestration.  Even the landscape and vegetation allows for the architecture to defining its own spatial relationship to the site.  Our only criticism is trying to call this a single family home, the programmatic strength and study could greater serve as a new possible network of urban sprawl.  Check it out after the jump!

Zero Gravity – Kervin Lau

In this project we can quickly see the heavy influence of Tom Wiscombe on Kervin Lau’s Zero Gravity Theater.  The exoskeleton of the facade and interior space are generated so as to create a “cavernous space” for the user to travel through.  Each move of the exterior is then forced to correlate to an interior condition, as the facade pushes and pulls to actually generate programmable space.  The project does reside next to Frank Ghery’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, so the project certainly fits the extreme landscape, yet the volumetric shifts hold a more intriguing personal interaction between site, circulation and program.  Check it out after the jump!

ROMANTIC DISSONANCE – ZIFAN LIU

“Instead of balanced, elegant and skillful, I want to produce disproportionate, absurd and raw as a unique sensibility to both the content and the form. yet still in a very sentimental context.”  Zifan Liu’s graduate thesis takes a step back from the controls of form and rational relationship.  He tries to design outside the limitations of actual architecture, and explores the absurdity of fantasy, a collage of random thoughts and space.  Reminiscent of collage design through the juxtaposing disparate elements of a place through the actions of excavation, addition, and reconfiguration .  Check it out after the jump!

Low Fidelity – Erin Besler

Low Fidelity by Erin Besler is a thesis that steps outside the generic fromula of approaching thesis; which normally is problem, solution, building.  The thesis challenges  the mediums in which architecture and building are understood.  She goes far beyond any case study in her explorational thesis which is married with House VI by Peter Eisenman.  Each time flipping the design on its head and challenging it in a new medium and way of understanding architect through graphic and physical mediums.  Check it out after the jump!

SCI-Arc – Advances in Architectural Geometry (AAG)

Sci-Arc just came out with “Advances in Architectural Geometry” for the AAG symposium at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.  The video showcases some of the polemic shifts that the field of architecture has run into. The AAG asked 15 other world-renowned universities to submit videos that we will be checking out and showcasing throughout the week.
