+POOL, Tile by Tile – Kickstarter

It seems every summer day we look out into the Boston Harbor or NYC rivers, and one mentions how awesome it would be to just jump into the water.  +Pool is still pushing forward to make this a reality in NYC.  One of the largest civic kickstarters ever done and you can be a part of helping to make it a reality.  We have been following +POOL, and Archie Lee Coates, Jeffrey Franklin, Dong-Ping Wong, every since the original idea was reveled.  Float Lab is just another stepping stone in making +Pool a reality.  A smart and creative design funded by the people for the people.  It seems like a no brainier!  So make sure to check out the +Pool kickstarter after the jump!

Overmining – Andreas Kostopoulos & Avra Tomara

Untitled-160_FRONT

If Tom Wiscombe is your studio professor you know you are going to be exploring the relationship of the architectural envelope and its relationship to the human body and the creation of space.  Andreas Kostopoulos & Avra Tomara put it as an exploration into creating loose and tight spaces that are then “overmined”.  The exploration leads to how spaces begin to push and pull against each other, when spaces kiss, and the junk space.  The program is then forced to push against its external envelope to define the buildings ornamentation, instead of being placed within a box.  The models gif alone is pretty awesome; check it out after the jump!

V-Dress – Brian Harms

Milling-Diagram5

As architects and designers we tend to stray into every field of exploration, which is proven by the diverse portfolio of Brian Harms.  A strong interest in digital fabrication and forward thinking design drew F+ to his work.  The V-Dress, or voronoi dress, is a cross pollination of architecture, fashion, and digital production.  We have touched about upon this topic before, as it seems to have become a growing trend with digital fabrication bridging into high fashion.  The V-Dress modular unit that hides the body plays with provocative nature of veiling and revealing the human body.  Check it out after the jump!

The Platform – Raphael Arthur

1002915886c637fb6dc796525fdb5c58

We came across the second year work of Raphael Arthur, out of the University of Lincoln, on our Instagram feed earlier this year.  His early diagrammatic model studies into spatial and programmatic relationship are really what caught our interests.  The models are simple yet rich in execution especially when paired with the heavily photo collaged interior renderings.  The final realized architectural model leaves us wanting another iteration taping back into the stronger diagrammatic language captured in the original studies.  We look forward to seeing future work from Raphael Arthur, as he is already creating his own strong architectural design style in his second year.  Check out more after the jump!

Mataerial – Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC)

Mataerial introduction

Last year we saw the personal 3D doodle pen come out, however Petr Novikov, Saša Jokić & Joris Laarman Studio decided to take it well beyond the maker movement and into the higher architectural realm.  With the assistance of robotic arms and a brand new method of additive manufacturing they have created Anti-Gravity object modeling.  This new method has created the ability to rapidly form structure free of conventional means, going beyond traditional 2D stacking done by most 3D printers.  It will be interesting to see what the limitations, strength, and real world applications this will bring about!  Check it out after the jump!

The days of summer are a welcomed relief after a year buried in studio, where you are constantly straining, flexing, pushing the designer within. Today we came across a short film sharing a glimpse into the culture and students of SCI-Arc.   The life of an architecture student is perfectly framed by LJ Roxas as “High Speed and always running”.  Never stop running and check out the film after the jump!
